How to make money in the goldfish business with the internet?

Selecting Breeding Stock

When you get the opportunity, it is a good idea to talk to the people who work at the pet store to get a feel for their experience.  Don’t be afraid to ask them questions.  Do they know about goldfish in particular, or are they only experienced in saltwater or tropical fish?  Remember that goldfish are very different from tropicals, and someone who knows a lot about other kinds of fish might not be able to help you much when it comes to goldfish.  If you are talking to someone who does not know much about goldfish, you might want to ask for someone else to help you.

Be on the alert for a worker who tries to get you to empty your wallet on stuff unnecessarily.  Employees or owners who are only interested in selling you something do not truly care about goldfish.  Beware of owners who would tell you that you don’t need a big tank for your goldfish, or tell you that a bunch of goldfish together would do well in a 20 gallon!  This is very common among people who want to get you to BUY so they can make the big bucks.  Don’t let someone bully you into doing anything, such as buying a load of fish on that will only end up dying from toxic chemical buildups in the water.  You will want to work with someone who is considerate and honest.

Selling Your Goldfish

If you are impressed with the store and have decided that it is a good place to buy from, it is time to shop for goldfish (yay!). Remember – if you want to make money selling goldfish, you have to invest money first.

A few tips:

  • Do not shop for a goldfish while you are in a hurry.  This is easy to do, but often results in regret over a hasty decision.  Take your time.  Try to find a comfortable position to get in while you look at the fish.  Stooping over for a while to see fish in a lower tank can result in back pain and make you want to make an abrupt decision.  Don’t be embarrassed to kneel or sit down if you have to.
  • You don’t have to buy the first fish you see.  Remember that you may have this fish for a long time if you take proper care of it, so you should really love it!  If you came into the store wanting a Black Moor, think twice before walking out with a Pearlscale so you don’t feel second thoughts once you get home.  Getting sidetracked can result in regrets, but it’s ok to be open-minded.  You may have regrets if you don’t get the fish you fell in love with because you insisted on getting something specific.
  • If you are a beginner, it may be a good idea to start with a breed of goldfish that isn’t very delicate, such as a Fantail or a Ryukin.  Smaller fish are generally weaker, so investing in a larger-sized fish may be smart.
  • Mark the behavior of the fish, if you can.  If you want to get multiple fish or already have a goldfish at home, do not buy a goldfish that is picking on the others, as he will probably do the same thing to yours!
  • Investing in a goldfish that is sick is not recommended, unless you are extremely experienced and confident that you can save it.  Even then, experienced keepers still lose previously sick fish!  Keep this in mind if you chose to go against this advice.

Once you have picked out the goldfish you want to raise and have successfully bred it, it is time to sell goldfish online.

If you are not comfortable buying a goldfish from the pet store you have gone to, it may be a good idea to explore other options.  Buying goldfish online or going to a different pet store may be the right choice – especially if you have not found what you are looking for. The internet is the best option for broadening your market, so go for it!
